Soma a muscle relaxant, is employed in the treatment of injuries and muscle discomfort. It is the brand name for carisoprodol and is available in tablet form, sometimes combined with aspirin, codeine, or caffeine. Unfortunately, this medication has become increasingly prone to abuse. It leads to the development of tolerance, necessitating higher doses for the desired effect and potentially resulting in addiction. In the United States, approximately 2 million individuals have misused this medication in the past. Over the last decade, abuse of Soma muscle relaxants has seen a significant rise. Patients often mix Soma carisoprodol with other drugs, particularly Vicodin and Xanax. This combination has been dubbed the "Houston Cocktail" or the "Holy Trinity." The popularity of this mixture has led to an overabundance of these three medications being distributed by unscrupulous medical practitioners in so-called "pill mills" – clinics focused on profit rather than patient care. For instance, in a fifteen-month period, a doctor in Houston issued over 40,000 Soma prescriptions. Soma carisoprodol can also be combined with codeine, referred to as a "Soma Coma." It is sometimes mixed with alcohol or heroin. Most individuals who end up in the emergency room due to Soma misuse have combined it with other substances.
